Daniel Possumato Obituary

Daniel D. Possumato, age 96, of White Oak, born on June 25, 1923. Husband of the late Fortunata “Becky” Possumato, he is survived by his brother Sam of Atlantic, Iowa and two sons: Dave Possumato of N. Versailles and Daniel Possumato of Brunswick, Maine. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, Derek Possumato and Danielle Iera; great-grandson, Mario Iera. He grew up in Altoona, the oldest son of Salvatore and Concetta Possumato, immigrants from the Molise region of Italy. As a youth, he earned money delivering newspapers and working after school at the Boyers chocolate company. Dan was a veteran of World War II in the Pacific, where he earned several medals, including the Purple Heart. His unit, the 11th Airborne Division, executed the famous raid that liberated thousands of internees from the infamous Japanese prison camp at Los Baños in the Philippines. After the war, he attended both watchmaking and art schools on the G.I. Bill, before starting a career in the manufacturing industry. He worked for Kelsey-Hayes and then U. S. Steel before retiring to pursue his other passions. He was an accomplished photographer who made wedding albums for hundreds of couples in the area, and he was also an exceptional artist, whose paintings won many awards at The McKeesport Art Group’s annual shows.
