Obituary

Harry Samuel LeWinter, 82, of McKeesport, passed away at home Sunday, May 29, 2022, with his son and daughter at his side.  He was born December 15, 1939, in McKeesport, the son of the late Edward and Jean (Hertz) LeWinter. Harry was preceded in death by his two sisters, Goldie and Gloria.   Harry was a graduate of McKeesport High School.  He served in the Army Reserves as an E-5 between 1957 and 1967.  Harry later pursued a Master of Education with the University of Pittsburgh, graduating in 1970.  Harry met his wife, the late Janice (Wilson) LeWinter, during his studies at the University of Pittsburgh, where she worked as an executive secretary.  They were married 55 years before she passed away in 2017.
Harry was a dedicated school teacher for over 52 years.  He began his teaching career as a Teacher-Coordinator in the Marketing/Distributive Education Department of McKeesport High School.  After retiring from McKeesport Area School District, he continued employment at various places like COGOs, the PA Census Bureau, and his dream job, the tool Department at Sears.  But most recently, he went back to substitute teaching for the Mt. Pleasant and Hempfield Area School Districts until October 2021, when he was diagnosed with cancer.  Harry loved computers and technology.  He was an early adopter of computers in the classroom as well as a personal user of digital calculators, even going so far as to wear a calculator/ databank watch decades before smartwatches were a thing.  Harry was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Youngwood.
Harry is survived by his two children Michael J. LeWinter and wife, Michelle, and Mary Elizabeth Machesky and husband, David; and four grandchildren, Carly Wnek, Parker LeWinter, Hannah LeWinter, and Lucas LeWinter.
